Humanity has gone through multiple transformations in all areas of life throughout thousands of years. But one thing has not changed - people are always longing for beauty! We excel in every imaginable industry in our pursuit of perfection, and floristry is not an exception. But when, where and why did the admiration of flowers start? Keep reading to learn the origin of the flower giving tradition.
Initially, the entire story of considering flowers, or rather plants, as presents started back when men had to hunt for food. Along with the prey, they would bring leaves and petals of different plants, including flowers, home, where women used them as medicine. Those plants that remained unused served as house decorations, which then became a common way of using flowers. Soon, fresh flowers were intentionally brought to the property to make the interior prettier and more colorful.
Then, during the period of royal dynasties, florists became a thing and were hired at every royal family. Florists were often trained to satisfy the particular taste of the family. In fact, some rulers even had flowers grown in their gardens, and florists would later arrange them in compositions for decorations or to entertain guests, such as with flower petal shower at the emperor Nero's house. Sounds like a fun activity, doesn’t it? :)
While admiring the beauty of plants was slowly becoming a tradition, different parts of the world favored different kinds of flowers. We are all familiar with the obsession over tulips in the Netherlands, but it all started when the flower was exported from Turkey. Now, Dutch fields of tulips are a part of the country's life and a huge national business.
In the Eastern European countries, in turn, flowers were often used as accessories to people’s hairstyles and clothes, as well as decorations for the majority of ceremonies. Because of the well-developed agriculture, Slavic people used to spend a lot of time outside, often collecting wildflowers to entertain themselves. They would later incorporate the flowers into their braids or make wreaths.
Of course, it's difficult to determine who was the establisher of the flower giving tradition, but we can definitely say that people have always appreciated flowers. Fortunately, the tradition continues today and has even grown into an entire industry, allowing florists, including our team at Floral N5, to enjoy playing with flowers.
